What is the theory test ?

The theory test is the first step. The aim of the theory test is to make sure you understand the rules and safety points of driving. You should prepare as much as possible before you sit the test, as you will not be able to take your practical test until you have passed.
You will have 57 minutes to complete the 50 multiple choice questions followed by The hazard perception (or awareness) test consisting of 14 video clips.
you must pass both parts of the test to pass.
You should arrive at your test centre 15 minutes before your test. If you arrive once the test has started, you will not be allowed to sit in the test and will lose your fee.

You can practise for the multiple-choice part of the theory test at: www.theory-tests.co.uk

All you need to do is register, which is simple and free. Registration will provide free access to two Car,and to two Motorcycle, theory tests.

You will also be able to subscribe to a paid service that will:

  • provide access to the full Official Car and Motorcycle DSA Question Banks as used in the real tests;
  • allow you to create mini-tests based on the Official Theory Test book Topic areas (this will aid your learning experience);
  • offer the opportunity to get a discount on selected learning products.

What is the hazard perception part of the test?

HAZARD PERCEPTION TEST THE FACTS

The hazard perception (or awareness) test consists of 14 video clips, each about a minute long. Each clip shows driving situations involving other road users and is shot from a car driver's point of view. As each clip plays a hazard - something which will cause the driver to change speed, direction or stop will develop.

In 13 of the clips you will have one hazard to identify, in the other, two. You will not be told which hazard perception test clip is the two hazard clip.
You identify the correct hazard or hazards by clicking on either the left or right mouse button. The earlier you identify the correct hazard or hazards the more you score.
The scoring goes from five to zero points.

Don't think you can continuously and frantically smoother the screen with clicks as the hazard perception clip plays. If you do you will score zero. However, you will not lose points for clicking on other potential hazards that may also be seen.

So, you watch a clip and in that clip you will see several potential hazards unfolding. Most will stay exactly that, potential hazards but one (or two) will become an actual hazard and cause the vehicle (the camera shot, the driver's point of view) to change speed, direction or stop. This is the hazard you must click on in order to score points. Clicking on the potential hazards will neither score you points nor lose you points.

PASS RATE
To pass the hazard perception test you must score at least 44 points out of a possible 75.

TAKEN
The hazard perception test is the second part of the driving theory test. After you finish the multiple-choice section (the actual theory test) you will be permitted a break of up to 3 minutes. A short tutorial video on the hazard perception test will then play, once finished the hazard perception test will begin.

DEFINITION
A hazard can be anything that causes a driver to change the speed, direction or stop the vehicle they are driving. Although in real life a hazard may be static such as a set of traffic lights, a junction or a bend, these are not the sort of hazards that you will need to identify during the hazard perception test. During the hazard perception test you will need to identify hazards that develop and thus have motion such as a bus pulling away from a bus stop or a lollypop lady stepping into the road.

Practical test for cars explained

Your driving test will start with an eyesight check and some vehicle safety questions. You will then start your practical driving test which will include some specific manoeuvres.

The driving part of your test will last about 40 minutes. Throughout the test your examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving, including when you are carrying out the set exercises. You can make up to 15 driving faults and still pass the test (16 or more results in failure). However, if you commit one serious or dangerous fault you will fail the test.

What is pass plus ?

PASS PLUS is a training scheme for new drivers. It's much more than just a few extra lessons. This specially designed course by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), with the help of insurers and the driving instruction industry, helps you

  • gain valuable driving experience safely
you will be taught how to deal with a wide range of road and traffic situations, many of which you probably won't have faced before
  • build on your existing skills and knowledge
it can take years to become a skilled driver. PASS PLUS helps get you there by speeding up the learning process under expert tuition
  • reduce your risk of being in a road crash
the course will help boost your awareness of all kinds of hazards and help you learn how to anticipate, plan for and deal with them safely
  • save money on car insurance premiums
naturally, you will have to pay for the course. Fees for the PASS PLUS course will vary depending on where you live and the instructor or driving school you choose. Bear in mind too that it will take a minimum of six hours, all of which need to be taken after passing your test. If more sessions are needed for you to successfully complete the course, this may add to the cost.
When you have successfully completed the course, you are advised to check available discounts offered by the insurance companies taking part in the scheme. The amount you save will depend on the company you choose, you may even save more than you paid for the course.
  • boost your confidence
if you feel nervous driving on your own, the PASS PLUS training can help you become more confident on the roads
  • give peace of mind to your loved ones
  • PASS PLUS consists of six practical modules which cover driving in town, in all weathers, on rural roads, at night, on dual carriageways and on motorways. You can take it at any time within the first 12 month of passing your test.
  • There is no test at the end of it – your driving will be continually assessed and you must successfully complete all the modules in the course to an
  • achieved or exceeded standard:
    • achieved – successfully reached the standard required for each of the competencies
    • exceeded – exceeded the required standard for each of the competencies

In exceptional circumstances, if a module can't be done on the road it will be covered in a theory session. The highest level you can reach is 'achieved' as you've not been able to demonstrate the relevant practical skills.

Don’t worry if you haven’t got a car at the moment, you may be able to defer the discount for up to two years. Again, check with your insurance company.

If you passed your test more than a year ago you should check that you’ll be eligible for the discounts on offer from your insurance company before you take the course.

Lessons times available between 9am and 8pm Monday to Friday
12pm to 6pm Sat. / Sunday.
